Each of
us has to acquire some degree of computer
literacy to succeed—heck, to even
function—in today’s information technology
(IT) dominated world.
Most of us use e-mail. Office
workers use word processors and spreadsheets. Engineers use CAD
programs. Postal workers sort mail using bar codes. Doctors use
CAT scans. IT is a part of living, learning, and all types of
work, not just the technical jobs.
Many IT jobs will go unfilled
because trained workers are not available. The majority of the
jobs will be in the small non-IT companies. These companies will
need e-business, media, and network administration employees, in
addition to technical support (software and hardware) personnel.
Information technology training
should not be thought of as a separate, or disjointed program of
study at the high school or post-secondary level. Today, we must
begin to understand that in the IT world everyone is seen as a
user. Some foundation in IT skills and knowledge is vital.
