Imaging Diagnostics CPU Objectives

Activity 1

1-1. Define imaging.

1-2. Compare radiography to radiology.

1-3. Research career opportunities within the imaging field.

1-4. Analyze imaging careers to determine which interests you most.

Activity 2

2-1. Examine the digestive and skeletal systems.

2-2 Analyze the importance of knowing body systems in the field of imaging.

Activity 3

3-1. Examine radiographs.

3-2. Analyze the x-ray tube and how it works.

3-3. Describe how a simple x-ray is taken.

3-4. View x-rays using a light box.

3-5. Analyze x-ray procedures.

Activity 4

4-1. Define radiation and its many sources.

4-2. Learn ways to limit radiation exposure and monitor dose limits.

4-3. Analyze preferred methods of radiation dose monitoring.   

Activity 5

5-1. Learn aseptic technique and its importance.

5-2. Discuss effective communication skills and how they relate to imaging.

5-3. Identify the steps involved in performing a simulated x-ray.

5-4. View a simulated x-ray including aseptic technique and effective communication.

5-5. Perform a simulated x-ray.

5-6. Analyze the relationship between appropriate technique and the outcome of the x-ray, as well as how communication enhances the experience for the patient.  

Activity 6

6-1. Define fluoroscopy.

6-2. Discuss what an image intensifier is and how it works.

6-3. Examine nuclear medicine and the responsibilities of those who work in this area.

6-4. Identify three tests which use barium: barium swallow, barium small bowel enema, and barium enema.

6-5. Analyze the differences between fluoroscopy and x-ray.

6-6. Discuss which medical situations would require fluoroscopic or nuclear medicine over the traditional x-ray.  

Activity 7

7-1. Describe intravenous pyelogram.

7-2. Define tomography.

7-3. Examine computed tomography and its history.

7-4. Describe how radiopharmaceuticals appear on SPECT tests.

7-5. Explain PET and its clinical implications regarding Parkinson’s disease.

7-6. Compare the various methods of tomography and describe major differences as well as similarities.

Activity 8

8-1. Identify MRI advantages and disadvantages.

8-2. Explore how an MRI can be helpful in diagnosing sports injuries.

8-3. Discuss the history of the MRI and learn about its inventors.

8-4. Compare MRI to CT or PET scans and list the advantages of each.  

Activity 9

9-1. Define mammography.

9-2. Discuss mammography’s history.

9-3. Explain when to have a mammogram, what the risk factors are, and list signs of problems.

9-4. Define two types of mammogram.

9-5. Explain what a “lump” in the breast is and what this could mean.  

Activity 10

10-1. Define ultrasound and learn of its many uses.

10-2. Explore the ultrasound’s history and its progress.

10-3.Discuss occupations relating to ultrasound, certifications, and areas of expertise.

10-4. Determine various uses for ultrasound in obstetrics and pregnancy.

10-5. Analyze the benefits and risks of ultrasound.  

Activity 11

11-1. Examine the therapeutic uses of radiation.

11-2. Discuss the two types of radiation therapy.

11-3. Identify side effects of both internal and external radiation therapy.

11-4. Examine various careers in radiation therapy.

11-5. Describe a situation in which someone is suffering the side effects of radiation therapy.

Activity 12

12-1. Practice additional simulated x-rays.

12-2. Discuss any difficulties performing simulated x-rays.

Activity 13

13-1. You will participate in a career shadowing activity the instructor has arranged.

OR

13-2. You will conduct research on mammography and breast health awareness.

Activity 14

14-1. You will participate in a career shadowing activity the instructor has arranged.

OR

14-2. You will continue research on mammography and breast health awareness and create a presentation.

In Activity 15, the students will finish any work they have not yet completed. They will complete the CPU by taking the Vocabulary Test and the Post-test, answering the journal question, and turning in any necessary work such as the research journal or presentation.
