First Aid/CPR CPU Objectives

Activity 1

1-1. Examine the importance of first aid and CPR.

Activity 2

2-1. Identify terms used in first aid.

2-2. Understand the legal implications of giving first aid.

2-3. Understand appropriate safety principles while giving first aid.

2-4. Examine the sequential steps of emergency scene management.

2-5. Learn how to perform a primary survey.

2-6. Learn how to perform ongoing casualty care until professional medical help arrives.

2-7. Consider how you would react to an emergency situation.

Activity 3

3-1. Examine the symptoms of shock.

3-2. Recognize when a victim is unconscious or fainting.

3-3. Analyze the necessary steps to treat shock, unconsciousness, and fainting.

3-4. Identify measures to prevent choking.

3-5. Recognize and examine treatment for choking.

3-6. Understand ongoing casualty care for a victim whose airway has been cleared.

3-7. Identify dressing and bandages used in first aid procedures.

3-8. Recognize major wounds, severe bleeding, amputation, and inadequate circulation.

3-9. Examine appropriate first aid for major wounds, severe bleeding, amputation, and poor circulation.

3-10. Describe methods you can use to calm yourself when you feel overwhelmed in an emergency situation.

Activity 4

4-1. Apply basic knowledge of the respiratory system to recognize breathing emergencies.

4-2. Perform mouth-to-mouth respiration (AR) on an adult casualty.

4-3. Perform mouth-to-mouth respiration on an adult casualty with suspected head or spinal injuries.

4-4. Evaluate two complications that may occur when giving AR.   

Activity 5

5-1. Apply basic knowledge of the respiratory system to recognize breathing emergencies in children and infants.

5-2. Perform mouth-to-mouth respiration (AR) on a child casualty.

5-3. Perform mouth-to-nose respiration on an infant casualty.  

Activity 6

6-1. Apply knowledge of cardiovascular disease.

6-2. Identify risk factors of cardiovascular disease.

6-3. Identify preventative health measures.

6-4. Identify cardiovascular emergencies.

6-5. Recognize angina and cardiac arrest.

6-6. Examine appropriate first aid for cardiovascular emergencies, angina, and cardiac arrest.

6-7. Perform one-person CPR on an adult victim.  

Activity 7

7-1. Examine the relationship between sudden cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation.

7-2. Define the components of an automated external defibrillation program.

7-3. Explain the role of CPR when delivering emergency care with an AED.

7-4. Identify the age and weight requirements for using an AED on a person in cardiac arrest.

7-5. Describe the basic steps of emergency care with an AED.

7-6. List the four steps for operating an AED.

7-7. Demonstrate preparation of the chest and proper electrode pad placement.

7-8. Demonstrate the application and operation of the AED.

Activity 8

8-1. Identify the four steps of a secondary survey.

8-2. Identify appropriate measures to obtain a history of the casualty.

8-3. Assess vital signs.

8-4. Understand how to perform a head-to-toe examination.

8-5. Examine first aid for non-life-threatening conditions.

8-6. Apply the principles of safety when moving a casualty.

8-7. Simulate moving a casualty from a life-threatening situation.  

Activity 9

9-1. Recognize bone and joint injuries of the upper limbs.

9-2. Identify repetitive strain injury.

9-3. Examine appropriate first aid for bone and joint injuries, muscle strain, and repetitive strain injury.

9-4. Apply a cold pack to an injured elbow.  

Activity 10

10-1. Recognize suspected head and spinal injuries, bleeding from the scalp and ear, and pelvic injuries.

10-2. Recognize various chest injuries, such as a penetrating chest wound, a chest flail, a rib fracture, or a blast injury to the chest.

10-3. Examine appropriate first aid for head, chest, and pelvic injuries.  

Activity 11

11-1. Analyze measures that prevent further contamination and infection of wounds.

11-2. Examine the use of dressings, bandages, and slings in first aid procedures.

11-3. Understand how to control external bleeding from a wound with an embedded object in it.

11-4. Understand how to control bleeding from the nose, gums, tongue, and cheek.

11-5. Examine appropriate first aid for a wound in the palm of the hand.

11-6. Examine appropriate first aid for an abdominal wound.

Activity 12

12-1. Identify measures to prevent eye injuries.

12-2. Recognize and examine appropriate first aid for eye injuries.

12-3. Identify measures to prevent poisoning.

12-4. Recognize and examine appropriate first aid for poisoning, bites, and stings.

Activity 13

13-1. You will participate in a career shadowing activity the instructor has arranged.

OR

13-2. You will learn about the emotional aspects of emergency care.

Activity 14

14-1. You will participate in a career shadowing activity the instructor has arranged.

OR

14-2. You will continue working in the First Aid program.

In Activity 15, the students will finish any work they have not yet completed. They will complete the CPU by taking the Vocabulary Test and the Post-test, answering the journal question, and turning in any necessary work such as the research journal or presentation. They will also have the opportunity to work with the Be First on the Scene assessment activity in the First Aid program.
