Activity 1

Activity 2

2-1. Identify what graphic communicators use to affect an individual, group, or entire society.

2-2. Recognize the history and components of graphic communications.

2-3. Use the ULTRA-Flex Express® software to draw freehand and specifically sized rectangles.

2-4. Consider your experience in making signs and how ULTRA-Flex Express might, or might not, help you.

Activity 3

3-1. Recognize how computers have helped reduce the time it takes to create signs and other forms of graphic communication.

3-2. Create circles and ovals in ULTRA-Flex Express.

3-3. Identify how symbols and colors help communicate a message.

3-4. Create five signs without the use of text so people all over the world can understand them.

3-5. With the purpose of graphic communication in mind, consider the importance of signs that people from different countries and cultures alike can understand.

Activity 4

4-1. Import and manipulate a graphic into ULTRA-Flex Express.

4-2. Examine what advertisements are, how they are used, and things to consider when making them.

4-3. Create an advertisement for a new pizza restaurant.

4-4. Assess why and how certain signs spark your interest in particular products or activities.

Activity 5

5-1. Cut your first project.

5-2. View a video on the weeding process.

5-3. Weed the excess vinyl and apply the stickers onto the Sticker Worksheet.

5-4. Consider the effects of stickers on packaging and why they spark your interest in a specific product.

Activity 6

6-1. Identify the basic principles of design and layout.

6-2. Recognize the various formats and applications used in graphic communications.

6-3. State the impact computers have had on the design profession.

6-4. Define elements.

6-5. Label the five basic principles used to create a composition.

6-6. Begin designing a portfolio cover using the ULTRA-Flex Express software.

6-7. Create a fundraiser banner for a club at school.

6-8. Considering the goals of graphic communication, write about how and why organizations benefit from fundraiser banners.

Activity 7

7-1. Identify goals of good design.

7-2. Discover the importance and history of typeface, font types, and readability.

7-3. Investigate the applications of proportion and contrast used in the design and layout process.

7-4. Add and manipulate a graphic to your portfolio cover.

7-5. Consider how the signs and posters in your classroom utilize elements of design.

Activity 8

8-1. Define rhythm and unity in design and observe how they pertain to layout and design.

8-2. Add your business name, mailing and web address, and phone number to your cover portfolio.

8-3. Complete the design of the portfolio which includes contact information, a logo, and the business name.

8-4. Consider how businesses spark the interests of prospective or current customers with portfolio covers.

Activity 9

9-1. Use the sign cutter to cut the appropriate portfolio designs on the red, blue, and black vinyl sheets.

9-2. Weed, layer, and apply the vinyl to the notebook as time allows.

9-3. Consider how the complexity of the design affects the layering process.

Activity 10

10-1. Complete the weeding, layering, and application of your business portfolio cover on your notebook.

10-2. Begin work on challenges.

10-3. Consider how the skills used to create your business portfolio cover might benefit you in the future.

Activity 11 through Activity 15 require students to complete challenges to meet numerous high level problem-solving objectives.

Activity 15

15-1. Select appropriate vocabulary terms based on the definitions provided.

15-2.Test your comprehension of concepts gained during this course.

15-3. State and explain your opinion of the Graphic Communications—Vinyl Signmaking CPU.

The objectives for the challenges in Activity 11 through Activity 15 of this CPU include:

Challenge 1

You will conduct research on a career of your choice in the graphic communication field. Share your findings in a presentation.

Challenge 2

You will choose an activity that your school might hold during homecoming (a pep rally, dance, sporting activity, etc.) and develop a banner for that activity.

Challenge 3

You will develop a sign that will be placed on a restaurant’s front glass window.

Challenge 4

You will design a license plate, choosing any design you wish.

Challenge 5

You will create vinyl designs to apply to a three-dimensional object of your choice.
