Activity 1

1-1 Discover the history of printing.

1-2 Recognize that the most significant determining factor in design is usually the reader.

1-3 Discover the career of a desktop publisher.

Activity 2

2-1 List the five basic principles used to create a composition that will be appealing to the eye.

2-2 Discover where the optical center of a page is.

2-3 Recognize the difference between formal and informal balance.

Activity 3

3-1 Recognize desktop publishing’s most common page size.

3-2 Identify the differences between serif fonts and sans-serif fonts.

3-3 Create a new document in PageMaker.

3-4 Type a paragraph and change some of the words’ fonts and attributes.

3-5 Save and print the file.

Activity 4

4-1 Define rhythm and recognize its most common form.

4-2 Discover the rhythmic effects of bulleted lists.

4-3 Identify why the Z pattern is so important when it comes to placing elements on a page.

4-4 Place (import) an image into PageMaker.

4-5 Manipulate that image by resizing and cropping it.

4-6 Explore the different PageMaker drawing tools and create several graphics using those tools.

Activity 5

5-1 Open an existing file that was created earlier in the CPU.

5-2 Manipulate text, boarders, shading, etc.

5-3 Discover the convenience of cut, copy, and paste.

5-4 Integrate text and graphics using text wrap.

5-5 Discover the career of a newswriter.

Activity 6

6-1 Discover and practice the various was to align text (left, right, center, justify, and force justify).

6-2 Recreate a certificate to meet certain specifications.

Activity 7

7-1 Discover and practice the use of guides including margins, column, and ruler guides.

7-2 Discover the career of a technical writer.

7-3 Begin development of a newsletter.

Activity 8

8-1 Continue developing your newsletter per the specifications outline in Activity 7.

Activity 9

9-1 Complete the newsletter and print it for instructor approval, which is based on specifications outlined in Activity 7.

In Activity 10, students will take the Vocabulary Test and the Post-test.

In Activity 15, students will take the Vocabulary Test and the Post-test.

Activity 11 through Activity 15 require students to complete challenges to meet numerous high level problem-solving objectives. The objectives for the challenges in this CPU include:

Challenge 1

You will conduct research on a career of your choice in the desktop publishing field. Share your findings in a presentation.

Challenge 2

You will design, create, and print your own business cards using PageMaker.

Challenge 3

You will use PageMaker to create a one-page, black and white magazine ad for a product of your choice.

Challenge 4

You will use PageMaker to create a short but appealing invitation to a business party.

Challenge 5

You will use PageMaker to create a blank chart that can be used to compare the advantages and disadvantages of different colleges you would like to attend.
