Soil Science PAC
Introduction
Soil
isn’t just dirt. Soil is the surface layer of the Earth that
supports all life. In the Soil Science PAC, students gain an
understanding of the value of this life-giving substance. As
students identify the origins, characteristics, and physical
properties of soil, they learn the importance of maintaining its
health and fertility.
Through hands-on applications like soil testing,
students check the pH of soil and learn to determine its texture.
Students also make recommendations for fertilizer applications as
they discover what conditions are necessary for growth to occur.
After all, it takes an informed farmer to produce a plentiful crop.
Students recognize regional differences in soil
as well as identifying various agricultural and nonagricultural uses
of soil. Meanwhile, students assess their own area’s involvement
through daily journal writings.
Once they have established a basis of knowledge,
students identify alternative methods to traditional soil-based
growing techniques.
Students can test soil for secondary nutrients,
determine slope, analyze soil samples, or explore careers in the
field of soil science.
