Horticulture PAC
Introduction
The
word horticulture comes from the Latin word meaning "garden
cultivation." Basically, horticulture is all about plants. It
involves planting as well as maintaining exterior landscapes and
interior plantscapes.
How important is horticulture in your community?
In the Horticulture PAC, students use interactive software to
find information to help them determine the impact of horticulture
on their own state’s economy. Students research different types of
commercial horticulture such as nursery operations, plant growing
operations, and seed producing operations. They also learn about
various types of plants, their characteristics, and how they are
produced and reproduced.
Using interactive videos and software, students
become familiar with different types of greenhouses and their
functions. They also identify the principles that landscape
designers follow in creating a design, and they use landscaping
software to help them translate landscapes into scaled drawings.
Students will follow the complete process of
landscaping from the design stage to installation and maintenance.
They identify the principles that landscape designers follow in
creating a design, as well as the different categories of
landscaping plants. With the help of landscaping software, students
translate landscapes into scaled drawings and recognize how
computers help solve design problems when changes need to be made.
