Throughout history, forests have played an integral
part in peoples daily lives. As the population has grown, so has the need for timber
production. Out of this growing need came todays expanding timber industry. Now we
enjoy many benefits of progressive forestry practices, from timber for our homes and paper
in our books, to the pleasure of a quiet walk in the woods.
What happens
after the tree is harvested? In the Forestry PAC, students follow timber processing steps, from
cutting and removal to the finished product.
Students will explore natural and artificial reforestation—they
understand the importance of forest restoration, and they determine how
this process is achieved. Even still, obstacles such as disease,
insects, and fire may interfere with a forest’s healthy growth.
Techniques are taught to assess and diagnose any potential problems that
might prevent a forest from maturing into a harvestable timber crop.
These and other activities provide the students with
the essentials they need to make responsible forest management decisions.
