Life begins as a
simple cell. However, the process of development is
far from simple. All living things are made up of many microscopic cells.
Animal
science involves every aspect of producing a wide range of animals and
animal products. Farm animal production has changed dramatically over the
past years. The image of farming as a red barn, chickens in the yard, pigs
in the mud, and cows in the field is no longer accurate. However, animal
production is not the sterile, mechanized, "food factory" that
is sometimes publicized either.
In the Animal Science PAC students will learn how only
3% of the United States population can feed the entire country as well as
the many other aspects of animal science.
They will
also identify the major components of an animal cell, explain the process
of cell division, and list and describe the stages of mitosis and meiosis.
After
studying about beef, horse, and poultry production and management, students will explore
the world of animal genetics and animal processing.
