New CADD - Architectural Design CPU
April 2, 2009

The floorplan students complete as seen in Envisioneer.Applied Technologies has recently overhauled its CPU (Career Pathway Unit) on computer aided design by refining its focus and using different software.  The CADD - Architectural Design CPU makes use of Envisioneer, an industry-based 3D architectural design software application.  Throughout the 15-hour course, students design a simple cottage as a way of introducing Envisoneer's many features, then go on to complete parts of a three bedroom, two bath ranch house.  While using the software, students also cover a great deal of content about how houses are constructed, how architects design homes by thinking about traffic flow, and the thought that goes into designing a home's three areas: service, living, and sleeping.  Students also understand how to accommodate for disabled persons by making doorframes wider, installing ramps, and supplying lower cabinets and supports for the bathroom.

Mathematical principles like the work triangle (used in the kitchen) and rise and run used to determine the construction of staircases is also included.

Lab Focus: Tennessee School for the Blind
November 20, 2008

Tennessee School for the BlindRaised eyebrows is the usual reaction we get when we tell people we have a Career Connections lab at the Tennessee School for the Blind.  But the fact is, for over six years instructor Ken Johns has been using Applied Technologies curriculum and materials to offer his students a wide range of experiences they might not have had otherwise.

The lab has over 20 Career Pathway Units (CPUs) ranging from Aerospace to Digital Photography to Robotics Technology to Structural Engineering.

"The technology curriculum is a dynamic, hands-on program of study that teaches students about the development and applications of technology and the effects technology has on individuals, society, and the environment," said Johns. "Our goal is to create excitement, amazement, and thrill that is shared by others who work with technology on a daily basis. The entire curriculum is computer driven with activities and lessons that allow the student to explore the three main areas of study: Communication, Transportation, and Production."
